Eight weird fetishes that really exist
Even Christian Grey would find these fetishes bizarre.
Some strange sexual desires — such as dendrophilia for sexual attraction to trees and avisodomy for having sex with birds — might sound as fictional as a page from “50 Shades of Grey,” but they are completely real.
Here’s a look at eight of the most shocking fetishes:
Dendrophilia
Dendrophilia — sexual attraction to trees — takes tree-hugging to a whole new level. Having sex with a tree sounds logistically challenging, to say the least. But, as New York sex therapist Dr. William Picker explained, being aroused by a tree does not necessarily mean having sex with it. “I don’t know about drilling a hole in a tree and sticking one’s member in it but that doesn’t mean that one can’t enjoy having sex next to a tree, enjoying a tree, while touching the bark,” he said. “I don’t think it means invaginating a tree and f---ing it.”
Tiger Devore, a Las Vegas-based sex therapist, said that dendrophiliacs tend to seek out bumps and bulges on the tree that might give them more gratification and often have preferences for certain types of trees. Some people have diverse ideas of communing with nature.
Mucophilia
Mucophiliacs are sexually aroused by sneezing. Picker said this fetish is easier to understand than you might think. “Sneezing has an orgasmic-like quality to it,” he said. “It’s a loss of control, an explosion and it’s a relief which, in a way, parallels coming. I don’t think one has to imagine too particularly much about the idea of that being associated with an erotic experience.” There is an entire online forum, Sneeze Fetish Forum, dedicated to sharing erotic achoo stories and offering support for the mucophiliac community.
Avisodomy
Avisodomy — sex with birds — is just one branch in the larger realm of zoophilia, more commonly known as bestiality. “Birds do have a particular texture to them, with feathers,” Devore said. “Birds tremble and they move and some people like that.” There are online forums dedicated to swapping sexual achoo stories. Given their abundance and inability to fly away, chickens are the most popular avisodomy pick. Of course, there are certain drawbacks. “The thing about f---ing a chicken is that it kills the chicken,” Picker said. You can’t have sex with a chicken without sacrificing the chicken.” Even if avisodomites accept that they’re going to sacrifice their avian sex partners, it seems as if simple size ratios would make the endeavor physically challenging. Some say they’ve succeeded, though. “I certainly have had men claim that they’ve been able to insert into a chicken,” Devore said. One well-known man who makes that claim is Larry Flynt. In 2011, the creator of Hustler told The Independent that, at 9, he lost his virginity to a chicken. Avisodomy is the practice of having sex with birds. “So I said, ‘Is this safe?’ He says, ‘Yeah.’ I say, ‘How does it work?’”
Stimming
Stimming is slang for the use of electricity for sexual stimulation. Picker said that the first time he had a patient tell him about stimming he was, well, shocked. Picker found out that stimming typically involves strapping on electrodes — like a tens unit — or using an electrode sex toy. “You can put in an electric butt plug and a catheter or vaginal insert so that the electricity can go between the two,” he said. There’s a catch, though; electrified sex toys are really expensive. Picker said sometimes they cost up to $750 apiece. He said that, if you’re into stimming, you can end up spending “hundreds of dollars on things to stick in your butt.”
Oculolinctus
Also known as worming, oculolinctus is the practice of eye-licking. Devore said that this peeper paraphilia is not as uncommon as one might think.For some people, this image is a turn-on. “There’s a thing around licking the eyes, sucking the eye,” he said. “Where these things come from is hard to theoretically have a strong stance on.” As with a number of these fetishes, there are drawbacks. In 2013, Huffington Post reported that eyeball licking was causing a huge pinkeye outbreak in japan.
Emetophilia
Emetophilia is a sexual fetish involving vomit. Some people — such as those who frequent vomiting fetish websites — just like watching others throw up. Some people like to be a little more hands-on in their approach. “I’ve certainly seen couples where they’ll go to a buffet and the partner will pick the food they want and the other partner will eat them,” said Devore. Then, the eater vomits up the meal and the other partner eats it, all for sexual gratification.
Mechanophilia
Some people like to do a lot more with their cars than just cleaning. Mechanophilia is a sexual attraction to machines — most commonly cars. There’s a lot that can go wrong with this fetish. Although the most obvious vaginal-like hole in a car would be the tailpipe, fetishists don’t restrict themselves to just that, according to Devore. “Usually in the upholstery there are slots, and they can grease that up and they become involved with the car in that way,” he said. While having sex with a car sounds patently dangerous, Devore said that there are other machines that cause more injuries. “People who get involved with things like vacuum cleaners can make mistakes and get hurt pretty badly,” he said.
Formicophilia
A lot of people think bugs are gross — but formicophiliacs find insects a total turn-on. Devore said that typically bug-lovers like letting creepy-crawlers play on their genitalia. Snails are used for sexual gratification by formicophiliacs, people who are sexually aroused by bugs. “It is about stimulation from insects or snails,” he said. “Snails in particular do leave a particular kind of stimulation that’s very intense.” It’s most common, he said, in Southeast Asia where there is a ready supply of oversized bugs. Although it’s easy to think of fetishes like these as being strange, Picker pointed out that they aren’t considered crazy or pathological. “I can remember when homosexuality was unambiguously considered psychopathology,” he said. “Now that seems like really ancient thinking. It was depathologized in the ‘Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders’ and in the latest version of the book, fetish — and the more clinical term paraphilia — was depathologized, too. “So now fetishes are no longer considered pathological. What turns people on can seem strange to a lot of other people.”

The definition of a sexual fetish is the need for an object, body part or material to achieve an elevated state of sexual arousal. Technically, some of the list might fall under kinks or preferences and not the specific category of fetish, but it seems these days it’s all gray area. Suffice to say, the list covers some of the most popular of them. Also, for many people, these are things that enhance their sexual experiences but aren’t necessarily required to achieve arousal. Is having a fetish harmful? Most experts agree that as long as you aren’t placing yourself or anyone else in danger, or breaking the law, that it’s harmless to indulge in a fetish to achieve release. On the other hand, if a true fetishist needs his or her obsession every single time they have sex to achieve an orgasm, it may not be very practical. What’s most popular these days on the sexual fetish menu?

10. Adult Babies
Adult babies are those individuals that enjoy being a baby again. They may enjoy regressing partially or completely, participating in the act of wearing diapers, being fed by an adult, sucking on a baby bottle or pacifier, dressing up in baby clothes, crawling instead of walking and speaking in “baby” talk.
9. Swinging and Group Sex
Swinging refers to the act of a committed, usually married couple indulging in sex with another couple or individual with the full consent of both partners. The idea of swinging or experimentation with group sex is usually driven by the male in the relationship, research showing over 75 percent of the time.
8. Water Sports
Part of what is termed “Water Sports” in the sexual arena is Urolagnia, a more common fetish than you might think. Urolagnia is the act of being aroused by urine, whether it is the feel or smell of it. It may involve the consummation or act of bathing in urine as well. Common types of Urolagnia include: wetting one’s self or the observation of another person wetting themselves while fully clothed, watching the act of someone relieving themselves in the bathroom or even acting as a human urinal, also known as receiving or giving a “golden shower”.
7. Cross-Dressing
Individuals that cross-dress wear clothing and accessories of the “opposite sex.” Cross-dressing is more common than you might think, predominantly affecting heterosexual and gay men. There are a variety of reasons for cross-dressing; it may be that the individual does not feel the gender they were born into fits who they are as a person.
6. Foot Worship
Foot fetishism is surprisingly common. It is the most common fetish of the non-genital body parts and non-sexual objects. Sigmund Freud offered the explanation that people develop this fetish due to the fact that the human foot resembles a penis.
5. Spanking
Why do people like being spanked? It has more to do with just the feeling of pain one feels. The area of the buttocks that meets the back of the thigh is considered an erogenous zone and if contact is made with the right amount of pressure and frequency, it can result in arousal for many people.
4. Voyeurism and Exhibitionism
According to researchers at the Carolina Institute, one out of three individuals enjoys watching sex or exposing themselves in public. Studies show that men are more voyeuristic than women with 12 percent of men being aroused while watching sexual acts compared to 4 percent of women. As demonstrated by the adult entertainment industry, 80 percent of their audience is men.
3. Rubber/Latex/Leather
This fetish relates to those that gain sexual enjoyment by wearing or having their partner wear rubber, latex or leather material. They refer to themselves as “rubberists”. The tight material acts as a type of sexual bondage. For some, the smell of rubber/latex/leather may also be a turn on. The fetish can range from wearing the more conventional types of items such as a cat suit to something more unusual such as a gas mask.
2. Sexual Role-play
Sexual role-play involves two or more individuals acting out different roles in a sexual scenario. It can be any type of sexual fantasy. It may be as involved as the participating individuals wish. Couples could choose to act the role-play out at a specific location, dressing up in detailed costumes or using different props.
